
Registered Nurse (Theatres) – Fixed-Term Contract (12 Months)
Location: Gibraltar
Start Date: ASAP - 12 months
Salary: £30,378 – £40,140 per annum (dependent on years of reckonable NHS service)
Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week (includes weekends, and night shifts)
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Registered Nurse (Theatres) to join our team on a fixed-term contract for 12 months to start as soon as possible. Ideal candidates for this position would be dual skilled in anaesthetics and scrub. You will play a key part in ensuring patient safety, maintaining sterile standards, and supporting the surgical team to deliver efficient, evidence-based perioperative care.
The post holder will provide professional nursing care across the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative phases of day surgery. Duties include pre-operative assessment, performing scrub responsibilities in the operating theatre, and supporting patient recovery in PACU.

Essential Criteria:
- Extended clinical skills relevant to nursing
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in perioperative nursing, including scrub responsibilities.
- Demonstrated experience in perioperative nursing, including scrub and circulating duties.
- Knowledge of aseptic technique, instrument handling and day surgery workflows.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced day surgery environment
- Registered Nurse with current and full registration with NMC.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise with members of the multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to work in all specialities in theatres.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Operative Duties
- Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments, including medical history, allergies, and baseline observations.
- Prepare and educate patients for their surgical procedures, providing reassurance and answering questions.
- Ensure all documentation, consent forms, and checklists are completed accurately.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal surgical readiness.
Scrub Duties
- Prepare the operating theatre with appropriate instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Operate according to strict aseptic technique, including scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
- Anticipate surgical team needs, handle instruments safely, and maintain a sterile environment.
- Perform instrument, sharps, and swab counts pre-, intra-, and post-procedure.
- Accurately document procedures, specimens, and equipment usage.
- Monitor patient safety and escalate concerns appropriately.
General Responsibilities
- Uphold rigorous infection prevention and control measures.
- Support the cleaning, handling, and sterilisation processes for surgical instruments.
- Maintain accurate and timely nursing records.
- Participate actively in on-call rotas.
- Engage in quality improvement programmes and audits.
- Participate in ongoing educational and professional development activities.
- Provide compassionate, patient-centred care at all times.
