Head Medical is working with the Tasmanian Health Service to recruit experienced doctors into a senior, service-based Psychiatry role at the Royal Hobart Hospital, delivering after-hours mental health care within a well-supported specialist team.

The Role

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest tertiary hospital and a key centre for mental health services.

This is a night-based psychiatry role, where you will provide after-hours mental health medical services across the Royal Hobart Hospital.

You will:

  • Assess and manage patients referred from the Emergency Department
  • Provide care to patients within inpatient mental health units, including the Short Stay Unit
  • Respond to mental health presentations across the hospital requiring specialist input
  • Work under the guidance and support of consultant psychiatrists (including remote on-call support)
  • Participate in a structured overnight roster (22:30pm – 08:30am, including handover)

You will operate with a high degree of professional independence, while remaining supported by experienced senior clinicians within a collaborative system.

Responsibilities

  • Liaise closely with consultant psychiatrists regarding patient management
  • Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive clinical documentation
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Respond promptly to clinical requests across the hospital
  • Ensure safe prescribing and management of treatments
  • Support continuity of care and discharge planning
  • Comply with all professional and legal requirements, including the Tasmanian Mental Health Act

These roles are particularly suited to experienced doctors seeking greater clinical autonomy and continuity, including those currently working at Specialty Doctor level in the UK/Ireland:

  • Experienced Registrars (ST5+)
  • Specialty / SAS Doctors
  • Doctors seeking a longer-term, senior clinical role outside traditional training pathways

Eligibility

  • Eligible for Provisional or General Registration with AHPRA
  • Experience at Registrar level (or equivalent), ideally within Psychiatry
