Opportunity

Working as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine within the HSE (Ireland's public health system), you'll provide high-quality care to patients in this leading university hospital based in South-East Ireland.

The successful candidate will play a key role in providing consultant-level leadership and clinical service in Emergency Medicine (EM) at this University Hospital, ensuring timely, safe, and effective care for acutely unwell and injured patients.

Where possible, the post holder will participate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the hospital's research activities within the research governance framework.

This role is not a substantive post but will be a relatively long contract of 6-12 months initially, with a view to going permanent

Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide specialist assessment and management of all patients presenting to the ED, including:

    • Medical, surgical, trauma, and paediatric emergencies

    • Minor injuries and ambulatory care cases

    • Major trauma stabilisation (prior to transfer if required)

  • Supervise and lead the ED team in daily clinical activity

  • Ensure safe referral and admission pathways with inpatient teams

  • Support critical care interventions including advanced airway management, resuscitation, and procedural sedation

  • Participate in the on-call rota

Leadership, Administration & Governance

  • Provide senior leadership to the ED, ensuring compliance with HIQA standards

  • Contribute to patient flow, waiting time targets, and quality improvement initiatives

  • Participate in hospital committees and emergency care governance structures

  • Develop local ED policies in line with the HSE National Emergency Medicine Programme

Teaching & Research

  • Supervise NCHDs (interns, SHOs, registrars) in the ED

  • Deliver bedside and formal teaching to medical students, nurses, and allied health staff

  • Encourage participation in simulation training and advanced life support courses

  • Engage in audit, research, and quality improvement projects

Requirements to Apply

  • Full registration (or eligibility for registration) with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) – Specialist Division in Emergency Medicine must be active and in place to secure an interview

  • Extensive post-graduate Consultant experience in Emergency Medicine

  • Completion of EU or UK specialist training (CCST or equivalent).

  • Advanced Life Support qualifications (ALS, ATLS, APLS/PALS, ACLS)

  • Broad experience in emergency resuscitation, acute medicine, and trauma management
