About the Job

  • Whangarei, Northland
  • Full time opportunities available

About the Role

Join our Critical Care Department as a Specialist Intensivist and help deliver high-quality care to communities across Northland. We also welcome applications from dual-trained specialists in intensive care medicine and internal medicine, emergency medicine, or anaesthesia, with the opportunity to develop a full-time position across both your specialties. You will also contribute to the teaching and training of resident medical staff and participate in the ICU consultant on-call roster.

Our modern nine-bed department manages more than 700 admissions each year, including a wide range of complex cases spanning paediatrics and major trauma, with over 25% of patients requiring mechanical ventilation. The unit provides medical oversight of the Patient at Risk service and is accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine for training in general intensive care medicine and paediatrics.

You will join a supportive team of eight Intensivists, nine registrars, and one senior house officer providing 24/7 cover. The department also provides medical and nursing support to a busy flight retrieval service delivered in partnership with Northern Rescue Helicopter Limited, supporting approximately 480 helicopter transfers annually.

About the Location

As well as a warm climate, the "winterless north" offers excellent schools; affordable housing and scenic coastal areas offering a range of recreational activities. We are just a two hours' drive or 25-minute flight from the international hub of Auckland.

About you

To be considered you must have or be eligible for specialist (or locum tenens) registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) in an Intensive Care Medicine or associated Vocational scope of practice.

Ideally you will possess FCICM or an equivalent qualification; however, we are also open to considering advanced trainees nearing completion of their ICU training.

If you are currently overseas / not yet registered, we can assist you with the application process to obtain MCNZ registration if offered a position.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please apply online and attach an up to date copy of your CV for consideration.
