About the Job

Are you a General Adult Psychiatrist looking to move to Hervey Bay in the Wide Bay Region of Queensland?

  • Excellent remuneration package up to AUD$539k dependent upon experience.
  • Additional overtime & on-call allowances
  • First class and well-resourced health service
  • Coastal living with islands, waterways and beaches, as well as national parks and Great Barrier Reef.
  • Regular daily flights to Brisbane and Sydney.

The Role
We're looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the team in Hervey Bay and the recently opened purpose-built, 22-bed unit at Hervey Bay Hospital, a significant step forward for the community and the service.

The new unit was completed in late 2023, with patients relocating in early 2024. The design of the facility was informed by extensive consultation with staff, clinicians, and consumers with lived experience. This collaborative approach has resulted in a modern, therapeutic, and purpose-built environment, which is directly linked to better patient outcomes and satisfaction.

You will be part of a service that is committed to professional development and a strong culture of supervision. Registrars receive psychotherapy supervision from an accredited supervisor as part of their training. You'll also have the opportunity to engage in research. As the service evolves, we are keen to develop quality improvement and research initiatives, and your clinical experience and expertise will be highly valued in these projects.

This is a role for someone who wants to be a leader and a mentor. You'll be guiding junior doctors, contributing to the clinical governance of the service, and helping to build a positive and supportive culture.

Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (ABPN certified) or New Zealand.

The Medical Board of Australia is establishing a new expedited pathway to specialist registration, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a specialist medical college for those with an accepted qualification. The list of accepted qualifications will be published shortly, with the new pathway available from December 2024.

The Location
Hervey Bay is known as the whale-watching capital of Australia, and from July to November, the humpback whales are a constant presence in the bay. The city is built along 14 kilometres of sheltered, sandy beaches, perfect for a morning walk, a bike ride on the Esplanade, or a swim.

Life here is relaxed and focused on the outdoors. The pace is slower than a major city, which for many is a huge part of the appeal. You can spend your weekends fishing, boating, or exploring nearby K'gari (Fraser Island), the world’s largest sand island, which is just a short trip away.

Hervey Bay has all the amenities you need: good schools, a university campus, major shopping centres, and a range of local cafes and restaurants. It's a growing community with a friendly, welcoming vibe. While the median age is a bit older than the national average, the area is attracting more families and young people, contributing to a vibrant and changing community.

This isn't just an opportunity to advance your career; it’s an opportunity to embrace a genuine work-life balance in a stunning coastal location.
