About the Job

We are seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist for a regional hospital in Geraldton, Western Australia.

The coastal setting and the ocean views make this is an ideal spot to settle into a sensational and relaxed lifestyle with the family or couples and singles alike. The beach is just a 5 minute walk from the hospital.

  • Relaxed coastal lifestyle, surf beaches and superb diving spots
  • Competitive package up to AUD$504,500 pa depending on experience, allowances etc. plus generous study leave and relocation assistance
  • Only a 45 minute flight from Perth.
  • Well equipped and staffed hospital in a regional setting

The Role
As a specialist anaesthetist, you will be a key clinical leader, delivering safe, high-quality perioperative and emergency care. Your work will cover the full anaesthetic spectrum, including pre-operative assessment, general and regional anaesthesia (spinal, epidural, nerve blocks), and complex airway management. You will also play a pivotal role in:

  • Supporting acute and post-operative pain management
  • Providing obstetric anaesthesia, including epidurals and emergency caesarean support
  • Contributing to trauma response and hospital-wide resuscitation
  • Enhancing patient safety and theatre workflow across a diverse surgical caseload

The blended medical model brings together Specialist Anaesthetists, Senior Medical Practitioners/Rural Generalist Anaesthetists, and Registrars, all supported by a strong culture of teaching and supervision. Inpatient units across the hospital are led by general specialists in medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, psychiatry, as well as obstetrics and gynaecology, working alongside trainee and service registrars, resident medical officers (RMOs), and interns.

The Hospital
The facility is a 100 bed hospital, currently undergoing a $188 million redevelopment including significant expansion of the emergency department and provision for an Integrated Mental Health Unit and Intensive Care/High Dependency Unit. It is a referral centre for the entire region with a very busy Emergency Department and Medical Department. Other towns in the region have small hospitals with service provided by GPs in private practice.

Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (ABA certified) or New Zealand.

The Medical Board of Australia implemented a new expedited pathway to specialist registration in December 2024, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a specialist medical college for those with an accepted qualification in Anaesthetics. The standard Specialist Pathway is still available to those who don’t qualify for the Expedited specialist pathway. The accepted qualifications are:

  • Fellowship of the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (FCAI), together with a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST) from Ireland, or
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) from the United Kingdom.

The Area
Geraldton is situated in the Midwest Region of the State and is an attractive seaside community 260m (420km) North of the State's capital, Perth. It’s a 45 minute flight from Perth. There’s some beautiful sights along the way; pristine beaches, national parks and carpets of wildflowers.

With marina-living available on the waterfront, semi-rural acreages for hobby farmers or new housing estates, there is variety of lifestyle options to suit your needs. The area is known for its sailing, kite, wind and wave surfing, and is home to some of the best diving sights along the WA coastline.
