About the Job

Opportunity:

As a Consultant Radiologist in General Radiology within the HSE you'll be a senior clinical specialist responsible for providing expert imaging services across a range of modalities. Their role supports diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient management across multiple specialties, while also contributing to teaching, governance, and service development.


1. Diagnostic Imaging

  • Interpret and report on a wide range of imaging studies including X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and fluoroscopy.

  • Perform and supervise image-guided procedures (e.g., biopsies, drainages, joint injections), depending on training and service needs.

  • Provide timely and accurate diagnostic reports to support clinical decision-making across specialties.

2. Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, such as cancer, orthopaedic, or medical case conferences, offering expert radiological input.

  • Communicate findings effectively to referring clinicians and provide guidance on appropriate imaging follow-up or further investigations.

3. Clinical Governance and Quality

  • Contribute to audit activities, peer review of radiology reports, and discrepancy meetings to maintain high standards of care.

  • Promote radiation safety, adherence to IR(ME)R regulations, and appropriate justification of imaging requests.

  • Implement and monitor HSE guidelines and protocols for imaging and reporting.

4. Teaching and Supervision

  • Supervise and mentor radiology trainees, medical students, and junior doctors rotating through radiology.

  • Deliver formal teaching sessions and contribute to continuous professional development of peers and multidisciplinary colleagues.

5. On-Call and Acute Services

  • Participate in the radiology on-call rota, providing imaging interpretation and emergency procedures outside regular hours.

Essential Criteria

  • Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the speciality of Radiology
  • Or must be on or working towards Specialist Registration IMC
