Head Medical is seeking motivated doctors for Renal Medicine / General Medicine opportunities at Whangārei Hospital, commencing February 2027. These positions may suit doctors with at least two years’ experience following Foundation training, particularly those who have completed Core Medical Training or an equivalent programme and are looking to further develop their medical expertise.

  • Renal Medicine and General Medicine: Build your experience in renal care while developing your broader medical knowledge and clinical decision-making.
  • A culture of learning: Join a department that values clinical education, shared learning, and ongoing professional development.
  • A varied clinical caseload: Gain exposure to a broad range of medical presentations within a regional hospital serving communities across Northland.
  • Multidisciplinary working: Work alongside experienced clinicians and colleagues across medical specialties.
  • An exceptional lifestyle: Enjoy beautiful beaches, coastal walks, native forests, and a relaxed subtropical lifestyle.
  • Salary  NZD $105,672–$147,778 (commensurate with experience)

The Hospital and Role

Whangārei Hospital is the principal hospital for Northland, providing secondary hospital care and specialist services to a large regional population. Its medical services include General Medicine and Renal Medicine, offering a varied clinical environment for doctors looking to broaden their experience.

This opportunity combines a focus on Renal Medicine with exposure to General Medicine, allowing you to build your understanding of kidney-related conditions while continuing to develop your assessment, investigation, and management of patients with complex medical needs.

The renal service provides care for patients with kidney disease, including those requiring dialysis. Working across renal and general medical services can offer valuable insight into the management of patients with multiple comorbidities and the relationship between renal conditions and wider medical presentations.

Northland also offers an interesting clinical setting in which to broaden your experience. The region's patient population and referral services bring exposure to a diverse range of medical conditions, including rheumatic fever and tuberculosis. This provides an opportunity to develop your clinical knowledge within a regional healthcare environment.

Education is an important part of the department, with an active clinical training programme that includes:

  • Weekly teaching sessions.
  • Simulation-based learning.
  • Journal clubs and case reviews.
  • Video-conferencing education.

For doctors who have completed Core Medical Training, or an equivalent programme, this could be an appealing next step: an opportunity to build on existing medical knowledge, gain further renal experience and continue developing within a supportive clinical team.

The Location

Imagine finishing work and spending your free time exploring beautiful beaches, walking through native forests or relaxing beside the water. Whangārei offers a relaxed pace of life, a subtropical climate and an outdoor lifestyle that makes it a wonderful base for exploring New Zealand.

The wider Northland region is known for its spectacular coastline, rich Māori heritage and welcoming communities. Highlights include:

  • Tutukākā Coast: Beautiful beaches, coastal walks and access to the Poor Knights Islands.
  • Poor Knights Islands: A renowned marine reserve popular for diving and snorkelling.
  • Bay of Islands: Sailing, kayaking and charming seaside towns, including Paihia and Russell.
  • Whangārei itself: A lively town with a waterfront marina, cafés, restaurants, local markets and arts and cultural attractions.

With road connections to Auckland and a domestic airport, Whangārei offers a great balance of regional living, outdoor adventure, and access to a major city.

Whether you are looking to develop your renal experience, consolidate your general medical skills or take the next step in your professional journey, Whangārei offers an opportunity to combine meaningful clinical experience with an enviable lifestyle.

Is this opportunity right for you?

To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have completed Foundation training or an equivalent programme.
  • Have a minimum of two years’ clinical experience gained after completing Foundation training.
