The Role
Waikato Hospital is a major tertiary referral and teaching hospital in Hamilton, serving the Waikato and wider region.
The Waikids Neonatal and Child Health Department provides comprehensive perinatal and neonatal care through its 41-bed neonatal unit, including 17 Level 3 beds, with paediatric surgical support and emergency regional neonatal retrieval services.
In this role, you will:
-
- Contribute to the clinical care of newborns across the neonatal service.
- Work alongside neonatal specialists and nurse practitioners.
- Participate in clinical education and develop specialist neonatal skills.
- Join the neonatal roster, including after-hours duties and night shifts.
This opportunity would suit paediatric trainees and doctors training in related specialties, including Emergency Medicine and Anaesthetics, who have an interest in neonatal care. Doctors with a PICM background seeking to broaden their neonatal experience are also encouraged to apply. Previous SCBU or neonatal experience is advantageous.
The Location

Situated right on the banks of the mighty Waikato River, Hamilton is the 4th largest city in NZ and it continues to expand. Key to this growth is its central location, easy access to other parts of the country and its affordability.
Auckland is only a 90-minute drive north and Tauranga is just over an 1hr to the east. The west coast and east coast beaches are within easy reach at weekends from Raglan, Mount Maunganui, Waihi Beach and of course, the stunning Coromandel Peninsula. And don't forget the 18 tranquil lakes towards Rotorua, also just 1hr 30mins away.
Enjoy the premier ski fields during ski season at Turangi and Whakapapa. Nearby Lake Karapiro hosts national rowing and dragonboat regattas each summer. The FMG Stadium Waikato hosts a range of top-quality sports from rugby league, rugby sevens and football. Seddon Park is home to cricket in the Waikato, with large cricket events in the summer (the Blackcaps taking on visiting international teams). It's also not far to drive to Hobbiton, which is a great place to take the family for a day out.
