About the Job

Head Medical is recruiting Psychiatry Doctors with Acute or Emergency Psychiatry experience to join a well-established and supportive Mental Health service in Invercargill, New Zealand.

We are particularly interested in candidates at Registrar or equivalent Senior Doctor (SAS) level, seeking a varied acute caseload within a service that offers strong clinical support alongside an excellent lifestyle.

You will be part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, delivering urgent and acute mental health assessment and intervention services across the Southland region, within a service committed to high-quality, patient-centred care.

  • Exposure to Acute & Emergency Psychiatry within a supportive multidisciplinary team

The Role

Based in Invercargill, you will work within the Southland Emergency Mental Health Service, supporting patients presenting with acute psychiatric illness and mental health crises.  This is a dynamic and rewarding post offering broad clinical exposure, including:

  • Acute psychiatric assessments
  • Crisis intervention and risk management
  • Emergency mental health presentations
  • Liaison with inpatient and community services
  • Multidisciplinary treatment planning
  • Participation in regional mental health service delivery

You will work alongside experienced Consultant Psychiatrists, Mental Health Nurses, and Allied Health professionals in a highly collegial environment where support and collaboration are prioritised.  The wider Mental Health service includes:

  • Adult Acute Inpatient Unit
  • Community Mental Health Teams
  • Emergency Mental Health Service
  • Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services
  • Older Persons Mental Health

This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your acute psychiatry expertise within a progressive New Zealand healthcare system.

Who We Are Looking For

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring:

  • Relevant Psychiatry experience at Registrar or Senior Doctor level, ideally in acute, emergency, or inpatient settings
  • Experience undertaking urgent and comprehensive psychiatric assessments
  • Confidence and sound clinical judgement managing acute mental health presentations
  • Strong communication and multidisciplinary teamworking skills
  • A commitment to culturally safe, patient-centred care
  • Eligibility for Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) registration via a Competent Authority pathway

This role is particularly well suited to:

  • Psychiatry Registrars
  • SAS / Specialty Doctors
  • Associate Specialists
  • Doctors working at Consultant level without formal CCT

Doctors with experience in crisis psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, acute inpatient psychiatry, or emergency mental health services are encouraged to apply.
