The Role
The successful Psychiatrist will provide specialist addiction medicine care and clinical leadership across statewide Alcohol and Drug Services. The role involves delivering direct patient care within a multidisciplinary team, including assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing management of alcohol and other drug dependence. Responsibilities include opioid pharmacotherapy assessment and induction (methadone, buprenorphine, depot buprenorphine), withdrawal management in inpatient and ambulatory settings, and continuous clinical monitoring.
The position also delivers consultation and liaison services to acute, primary, and community health providers, and provides education and training to medical students, clinicians, and other groups, with a strong focus on harm minimisation and evidence-based treatment.
Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (ABPN certified) or New Zealand.
For those trained in the UK, the Medical Board of Australia implemented a new expedited pathway to specialist registration in December 2024, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a specialist medical college for those with an accepted qualification in Psychiatry. The only accepted qualifications are MRCPsych and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) after 2007. The standard Specialist Pathway or the Accelerated Pathway are still available to those who aren’t eligible for the Expedited specialist pathway.

The Location
This North Tasmanian city is picturesque and reflects its colonial history, you can also see Victorian and Georgian influences mixed in with the more modern architecture, which all adds to the overall charm of the place. Here, you can enjoy all the facilities of modern city living with excellent schools and affordable housing, whilst being free of traffic and large commutes. Launceston is the “hub” of the North and is a location for those seeking an escape from the frantic big city life for a more laidback pace of living.
Tasmania is known for its beautiful fresh produce and seafood, and this city makes the most of this reputation, attracting “foodies” with its restaurants and cafes. Launceston was named as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2021.
The temperate climate and four distinct seasons - including gloriously warm summers without the oppressive humidity or heat, and cool winters - mean the region has perfect wine growing conditions and this is reflected in the excellent wines produced along the Tamar River, with lots of little boutique wineries.
Easily accessible, there is a local airport and short daily flights to Melbourne and Sydney, making connections to international flights really easy.
