The Consultant Psychiatrist is responsible for:
- providing high quality psychiatry services and consumer care,
- developing formal links with primary care givers and external Mental Health Services to promote continuity of treatment and shared care management.
- working in collaboration with the other clinicians and leaders to provide multidisciplinary consideration of needs.
- providing leadership, orientation, training, supervision, and education, where relevant, for doctors in training, Service Registrars, Health Service Medical Practitioners and other health workers.
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either Ireland, Canada, USA (ABPN certified) or New Zealand.
The Medical Board of Australia implemented a new expedited pathway to specialist registration in December 2024, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a specialist medical college for those with an accepted qualification in Psychiatry. The only accepted qualifications are MRCPsych and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) after 2007. The standard Specialist Pathway or the Accelerated Pathway are still available to those who aren’t eligible for the Expedited specialist pathway.
