Lead Tertiary Paediatric Intensive Care for the State of Tasmania

An outstanding opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Paediatric Intensivist to join the Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (NPICU) at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The Department provides tertiary-level care to critically ill neonates, infants and children across Tasmania. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering specialist paediatric intensive care services and supporting the Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (PETS).

The Role

The NPICU is Tasmania’s sole tertiary referral unit for critically ill neonates and children. It operates within the Royal Hobart Hospital and collaborates closely with the Critical Care Retrieval Service of Ambulance Tasmania.

As a Consultant Paediatric Intensivist, you will deliver specialist clinical services of the highest standard within a collaborative tertiary setting.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing consultant-level care in the Neonatal and Paediatric ICU (NPICU)

  • Participating in the Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (PETS) on-call roster, including retrievals across Tasmania

  • Diagnosing and managing critically ill term neonates, infants and children

  • Supporting neonatal intensivist colleagues in the care of neonatal ICU patients

  • Providing advice and consultative support to paediatric services Statewide

  • Supporting adult ICU colleagues managing paediatric admissions where required

  • Engaging in post-discharge follow-up of NPICU patients

  • Active involvement in quality improvement, guideline development and audit

The position may require participation in after-hours on-call services.

Requirements

  • Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or an equivalent overseas specialist qualification (CCT UK, CSCST -Ireland, ABIM  - USA, RCPSC – Canada, Vocational Registration  - NZ)

  • Be eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA)

Desirable

  • Recognition as a Specialist Intensivist by the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM) or equivalent
