Opportunity
As a Consultant in Geriatric Medicine in the HSE you'll be a senior specialist member of the geriatrician team at this university hospital. The consultant geriatrician plays a central role in the identification, admission, oversight, and discharge planning for patients utilising the contracted post-acute rehabilitation beds across the region.
The post supports development of integrated, age-friendly care pathways in line with Sláintecare and HSE National Clinical Programme for Older People.
Clinical Responsibilities

Lead multidisciplinary care of older patients across:

Acute Frailty Services (e.g., Frailty at the Front Door, ED interface)

Inpatient Geriatric Ward (rehabilitation, deconditioning, delirium, complex needs)

Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) clinics
-
Orthogeriatrics (liaison with trauma team)
-
Outpatient services – falls, memory/dementia, continence, syncope

Day hospital / ambulatory geriatric care

Provide inpatient consultations across medical and surgical wards

Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and family case conferences

Collaborate with community services (public health nurses, GPs, reablement teams)
As the appointed Consultant you'll be expected to:

Deliver expert care in Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) across acute inpatient services and rehabilitation settings, including off‑site rehab beds

Lead multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) comprised of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nursing staff, and community carers

Provide inpatient geriatric and community geriatric services across hospital and regional settings

Supervise and teach NCHDs and other health professionals, aligning with the hospital's role as a teaching hospital

Participate in the General Medicine rota (subject to service need)
This role is not a substantive post but will be an initial short-term contract of 12 months, to potentially be extended

Essential Criteria
- Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the speciality of Geriatric Medicine / Or must be on or working towards Specialist Registration IMC.
