About the Job

Opportunity:

Working as a Consultant in General Medicine within the HSE (Ireland's public health system), you'll provide high-quality care to patients in this leading university teaching health service in Kerry.

This role is not a substantive post but will be a relatively short contract of 6 months with a view of going permanent.

Clinical Duties

Responsible for providing expert medical care to adult patients with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. This role involves clinical leadership, supervision of junior staff, service development, and contribution to quality improvement initiatives.


1. Clinical Care

  • Diagnose and manage complex and multi-system medical conditions across a broad spectrum (e.g. diabetes, respiratory illnesses, infections, gastrointestinal conditions).

  • Lead care on general medical wards, including daily rounds and case discussions.

  • Assess and treat patients presenting with undifferentiated or multiple co-morbidities, particularly in emergency or acute medical settings.

  • Support continuity of care from admission through discharge, coordinating with community services as needed.

  • Run outpatient clinics for chronic disease management and follow-up care.

2. Supervision and Education

  • Supervise and mentor non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs), including interns, SHOs, and registrars.

  • Teach medical students, deliver formal education sessions, and promote a learning culture.

  • Provide clinical leadership to multidisciplinary teams including nursing, allied health, and pharmacy staff.

Essential Criteria

  • Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the speciality of General Internal Medicine
  • Or must be on or working towards Specialist Registration IMC
