Opportunity

To provide a high-quality, consultant‐led gastroenterology service covering outpatient, inpatient and endoscopy procedural work at this HSE University Hospital.

To lead and deliver safe, effective, patient-centred care across the spectrum of GI and hepatobiliary disorders, contribute to service development, and participate fully in the clinical governance, teaching and multidisciplinary activities of the department.

Duration - 12-month contract with a view to going permanent 


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead outpatient gastroenterology clinics (referrals from GPs, other hospital specialities) for a wide range of GI conditions (oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, biliary tree, pancreas).

  • Provide inpatient gastroenterology consultations and direct care for patients admitted under other specialities (medicine, surgery) who require GI/hepatology input.

  • Undertake a significant procedural endoscopy commitment (diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy) within the Endoscopy Unit.

  • Collaborate closely with endoscopy nursing staff, technician/staffing teams, multidisciplinary colleagues (surgeons, dietitians, stoma/IBD nurse specialists) and other clinical services.

  • Share on-call duties for gastroenterology/acute general medicine as required by the department.

  • Participate in departmental/service meetings, clinical governance activities (audit, morbidity/mortality, guideline development), quality improvement and risk management.

  • Engage in teaching of junior doctors, trainees, nurses, and other allied health professionals; possible involvement in undergraduate teaching

  • Maintain CPD, licensing, professional development and adhere to national/international standards of gastroenterology practice.

Essential Criteria

  • Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the speciality of Gastroenterology.
  • Or must be on or working towards Specialist Registration IMC - close to completion
