If you’re a Canadian-trained Diagnostic Radiologist considering Australia as a potential next step, there has recently been an important development worth knowing about.
From 1 July 2026, specialist international medical graduates with a Specialist Certificate in Diagnostic Radiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), who commenced training on or after 1 July 2002, are eligible to apply to practise in Australia through the Expedited Specialist Pathway, subject to the relevant requirements.
For eligible Canadian-trained radiologists, this offers a more streamlined route to specialist registration in Australia, making the country more accessible to those who may previously have been deterred by the complexity of the registration process.
Moving from Canada to Australia
Canada is a hard place to beat. But if you’ve ever found yourself thinking about a change of scenery and a new adventure, Australia could be worth a look.
For Canadian-trained radiologists, moving to Australia offers the opportunity to experience a different healthcare system, explore new professional opportunities and enjoy a different way of life.
At Head Medical, we help radiologists explore opportunities in Australia and support them through the process, from finding the right role to navigating registration, licensing and immigration.
There are plenty of reasons why Australia appeals to doctors from Canada. Professionally, there are opportunities for radiologists across the country, with roles to suit different levels of experience and subspecialty interests.
Then there’s the lifestyle.
If you’re used to Canadian winters, the idea of swapping snow boots for sandals might sound appealing.
Australia offers a huge variety of places to live, from busy cities to quieter regional areas. Whether you’re looking for beaches, outdoor adventures, great food and culture, or simply a bit more sunshine, there’s a lot to choose from.
Is Australia the right next step for your medical career?
For an established consultant doctor, moving internationally isn't necessarily about finding a higher salary or simply securing another job. You may already have a successful career in Canada.
Instead, the questions might be:
-
Could I see myself living somewhere different?
-
Would Australia offer the lifestyle I’m looking for?
-
Are there opportunities that fit my subspecialty and experience?
-
What locations might suit me and my family?
-
What would the working environment be like?
-
Ultimately, would Australia offer the right next chapter, both professionally and personally?
There are opportunities across Australia for internationally trained radiologists, although the right role will depend on factors such as location, subspecialty interests, experience and the requirements of the relevant registration pathway.
For some consultants, it may be a career move. For others, it may be a lifestyle decision. And for some, it may simply be something they’ve always wondered about.
There isn't one reason to make an international move. It depends on what you're looking for.
Registration for Canadian-trained radiologists
Registration is usually one of the first questions we get from doctors considering Australia, and understandably so.
The Expedited Specialist Pathway offers a more direct route to registration for eligible internationally trained specialists whose qualifications have been assessed as substantially equivalent to an approved Australian qualification.
For Diagnostic Radiology, the relevant Canadian qualification is the RCPSC Specialist Certificate in Diagnostic Radiology, subject to the eligibility criteria.
Registration is not automatic. Eligible applicants must still meet the pathway requirements, including supervised practice, Australian healthcare orientation, cultural safety education and workplace-based assessment.
For eligible Canadian-trained radiologists, this alternative to traditional specialist recognition may offer a more straightforward route to practising in Australia.
The process can still sound complicated when you first start looking into it, but you don't have to work it all out yourself.
Our Regulatory and Migration Team can help guide you through the process, explain what may be required and support you as you work towards registration.
It's worth starting the conversation early, even if you're only considering a move at this stage.

What if you're trained outside Canada?
The recent change is particularly significant for Canadian-trained Diagnostic Radiologists because the RCPSC Specialist Certificate in Diagnostic Radiology is included among the qualifications recognised under Australia's Expedited Specialist Pathway, subject to the relevant criteria.
If you trained elsewhere, other specialist recognition pathways through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) may apply. The appropriate route will depend on your training, qualifications, experience and individual circumstances.
Requirements can vary considerably between pathways, so understanding which route applies to you is an important part of considering an international move.
Moving from Canada to Australia with your family
Moving overseas is a big decision, particularly when you're doing it with a partner or children.
There are plenty of practical questions to think about, including schools, housing, banking and visas. Having the right information and support can make the decision much easier.
Our team can help you navigate the practical side of the move and connect you with the right people for financial and immigration advice.
It's important to look at the bigger picture, too. Finding the right job is one part of the decision, but you'll also want to feel confident that the location and lifestyle will work for you and your family.
Taking the time to explore your options before committing to a move can make all the difference.
