From 1 July 2026, Australia will offer a faster route to specialist registration for eligible Canadian-trained diagnostic radiologists, following the approval of a key Canadian qualification uner the the Expedited Specialist Pathway (ESP).
The Medical Board of Australia has confirmed that the Specialist Certificate in Diagnostic Radiology awarded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) is now recognised as substantially equivalent to Australia's FRANZCR qualification.
This decision follows a detailed review conducted by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and represents a significant development for Canadian radiologists considering a move to Australia.
Who is Eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway?
From July 2026, diagnostic radiologists can apply through the Expedited Specialist Pathway if they:
- Hold the RCPSC Specialist Certificate in Diagnostic Radiology
- Started their specialist training on or after 1 July 2002
Eligible candidates will benefit from a simplified and faster specialist registration process, avoiding the full individual college assessment that is typically required through other pathways.
What is the Expedited Specialist Pathway?
Introduced in 2024, the Expedited Specialist Pathway Australia programme was designed to:
- Attract specialist doctors from comparable healthcare systems
- Reduce duplication in assessment processes
- Accelerate access to specialist registration in Australia
For Canadian radiologists, the pathway provides a clearer and more efficient route to practise in Australia, where demand for diagnostic radiology specialists remains strong across metropolitan, and regional locations.
Diagnostic Radiology is recognised as a priority specialty in many parts of Australia, creating excellent opportunities for internationally trained specialists.
What about UK and Irish Radiologists?
The AMC also reviewed radiology qualifications from the UK and Ireland. However, these qualifications were not approved for inclusion in the Expedited Specialist Pathway:
- UK FRCR and Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)
- Ireland FFR RCSI and Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST)
Doctors holding these qualifications remain eligible to work in Australia but must apply through the existing Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG).
Unlike the ESP, the SIMG pathway requires a case-by-case assessment by the relevant specialist college.
Why were UK and Irish Qualifications not Included?
Although the training systems are broadly comparable, the AMC identified key differences between the Australian and Canadian models and those used in the UK and Ireland.
These differences include:
- Training focus, with Australia and Canada maintaining a more generalist approach while UK and Irish training becomes increasingly subspecialised in later years
- Assessment methods and programme structure
- Scope of practice requirements, including areas such as women's imaging
As a result, substantial equivalence could not be confirmed at this stage.
Alternative Pathways for International Radiology Subspecialists
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) has also introduced a Defined Scope of Practice pathway for selected radiology subspecialties, including:
- Interventional Radiology (IR)
- Interventional Neuroradiology (INR)
- Paediatric Radiology
This pathway allows applicants to be assessed within their specific area of expertise rather than across the full scope of diagnostic radiology practice.
However, the Defined Scope of Practice pathway does not lead to FRANZCR Fellowship.
Ongoing Reform of Australia's Specialist Registration Pathways
Australia's specialist registration framework continues to evolve.
Current reviews are focused on:
- Reducing assessment timeframes
- Improving administrative efficiency
- Streamlining international medical recruitment
Further changes may expand access to the Expedited Specialist Pathway for additional international qualifications in the future.
