In the second installment of series, Nic Ruecroft (our own resident Australian) highlights some interesting things to see and do in and around the beautiful areas of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Go a little south west from Brisbane and you’ll get to Gold Coast. Of course some of the main attractions of Gold Coast are the beaches, but once you’ve dried off from your dip, there’s a lot more on offer. Here are a few of our favourites.
With a variety of garden styles and accessible pathways the Tambourine Mountain Botanic Gardens is a lovely retreat. They have a lake, wisteria walk and a cottage garden style perennial garden. The Garden Club holds regular concerts in the beautiful parkland.
Tallebudgera Creek is a stunning turquoise creek running out to the ocean which offers gently flowing waters for swimming, kayaking, canoeing and fishing. There is a picnic area and playground nearby with changing rooms and sheltered areas.
After a short rainforest walk you reach the Best of All lookout. With views from Tweed Heads to Byron Bay and Mount Warning and set in the Springbrook National Park it’s not been badly named! Head up in the evening to catch the incredible sunset, just remember to bring a torch to light your path back.
For those with toddlers in tow the Rock Pools in Southport are a great water play area. A series of shallow pools with waterfalls and lots of shade are close to a café and set in a park right on the coast. Great for a safe splash and giggle.
During the season (between June and October) humpback whales are sometimes spotted off the coast, and a whale watching cruise is a great way to get up close to these amazing creatures. There are several companies that depart from Gold Coast.
