We are seeking an Emergency Physician (FACEM or equivalent) to join an enthusiastic and passionate team, in Tauranga, in one of the most modern and dynamic Emergency Departments in NZ.

It’s an interesting and varied caseload and after a busy day in the office, you can put down the pager and pick up the surfboard and head straight to the beach. Alternatively, fire up the BBQ and sit on the deck, enjoying the warm early evening.

  • City by the beach, right on the Pacific Ocean, with a truly relaxed lifestyle
  • One of the busiest Emergency Depts in NZ, everyday is different!
  • Teaching hospital with a strong emphasis on education, a clinical school is attached
  • Fellowship of Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or equivalent qualifications required
  • 5th largest city in New Zealand and a vibrant economy
  • 2 hour drive to Auckland and/or domestic airport with daily flights to Auckland
  • Permanent position, start in 2013 – timescales dependent on registration & immigration – which we arrange for you!

The Role

This is one of the busiest Emergency Departments in NZ, which sees a varied case-mix coming through the door (over 47,000 attendances per annum, of which over 10,000 are children) and as the successful candidate you will be joining a friendly team of 7 Consultants in both helping to provide direct clinical care to a regional population of 200,000 and supervising the 14 Resident Medical Officers and 3 Emergency Nurse Practitioners , assisting colleagues in providing a comprehensive range of services to a population of 200,000. This is also a teaching hospital and clinical school, so education and promoting continuing professional development of junior doctors, specialist colleagues and non-medical staff is also a vital part of the role.

This is a really interesting role that has the scope to support your emergency medicine subspecialty interests. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will have a commitment to providing excellent patient care and participating in teaching and education, as well as being part of the rostered shifts and after hours on call. You may even have experience of service development and an innovative approach to work that promotes quality healthcare delivery, and your ideas and experience would be welcomed.

You must be qualified FACEM specialists or be able to demonstrate equivalent training, experience, and examinations that would enable ready progression to recognition of training with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.

The Location
This is a premier destination and one of New Zealand’s fastest growing regions. Migrants from all over the world have made their home here, primarily for the quality of life and the city is well known in NZ for many things - it’s laidback vibe, its café culture, the surfing lifestyle, the white sandy beaches, safe and family-friendly living with excellent schools and most of all – the sunshine!

This city lies in one of the warmest regions of New Zealand and summertime here is really something to experience. Kiwis from all over New Zealand travel here for the summer, many of whom have holiday apartments and return year after year. Experience the famous Salt Water Hotpools, big game fishing, beach volleyball, surfing, dolphin watching, camping out with the kids, visiting the world class vineyards, enjoying the many cafes and restaurants along the waterfront, as well as visiting the large shopping malls.

As a Tauranga local, I know the area well and it’s such a great place to raise a family or simply to enjoy the outdoors lifestyle.

Housing is affordable and you can live near the beach or up in the hills, which have fantastic views across the region from the eastern to the western Bay of Plenty. In terms of everyday lifestyle, it’s not unusual to see joggers on the beach, or residents walking around the base of Mount Maunganui or sitting out enjoying the restaurants in the evening, or participating in all manner of sports and training, healthy living and wellness activities. There's a satellite campus of the University of Waikato, as well as the Port of Tauranga with its busy harbour attracting cruise ships, and a large marina for mooring yachts and pleasurecrafts. The living is good in Tauranga, why not make a change in 2013?
