Provision of high-quality Neurology, including Stroke, care to patients in the city of Wollongong, As a dynamic Consultant to be considered for this position, requires a high level of clinical experience, expertise and specialised knowledge in Neurology.

Head Medical is seeking a Consultant Neurologist for this beautiful coastal region of New South Wales – only an hour away from Sydney!

Requirements to apply

Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, USA or New Zealand

The Position in detail: 

The role includes participation in General Neurology Department activities including both General Neurology and acute and subacute Stroke clinical duties and equal participation in the on-call roster and care for both Acute Stroke/stroke and General Neurology presentations.

Provide expert, high-quality medical assessment and management of presenting patients in the Neurology Service within the Health District, including responsibility for the provision of specialist Neurology Services to emergency patients, inpatients and outpatients.

As a senior neurologist, you will proactively support the development of Neurology services, facilitating a culture of learning and best practice, participating in teaching and clinical governance activity, and supporting other service development and research objectives.

The Hosptial

The main hospital provides Neurology acute and subacute/outpatient care including 24/7 acute stroke assessment via FAST+ team with specialised nurse and registrar attending call on-site and remote radiology access for Neurologists on call.

Junior staff for the Neurology department currently comprise one core Neurology advanced trainee and one or two other ATs in elective Neurology and/or General Medicine, two BPT trainees, and two residents (PGY 2, PGY 1). 

Neurology nursing staffing is stable with high quotient of long-term experience in Neurology, and you will work closely with the dedicated allied health team on the Neurology ward. There is one EEG technician and one Neurophysiology nurse, with NCS/EMG, Botulinum toxin, and EEG provided onsite.

The Neurology Unit cooperates and integrates with Neurosurgery and Neuropsychiatry (including dedicated FND service) with access to full suite of medical subspecialties.

All three main hospitals have an admitting General Medicine service.

The Location

Wollongong, located just 80 kilometres from Sydney, is the largest city in the region. A diverse city with many places to visit, eat and shop with excellent night markets and a fantastic music scene. The proximity to the ocean gives you the choice for a lively weekend full of things to do and see.

Or indulge in outdoor activities like the excellent snorkelling and diving in a magical aquatic reserve, iconic surf breaks, a tranquil lake and river where you can test your SUP or kayaking skills, or a batch of activities that will get your adrenaline flowing.

The area is bordered by the mountains, coastal plains and over 100 magnificent beaches. This beautiful natural environment plays a central role in the quality of life of the local community. Commute times are short; and when you’re not at work, you can relax on some of the country’s best beaches! Visit the beautiful beaches of Jervis Bay, explore the stunning coastal rainforests of Kangaroo Valley and outdoor adventure activities or enjoy the local dining – all contributing to a perfect work-life balance.
