Opportunity

To lead planning, coordination and implementation of stroke service across this NSW Health District. The practitioner will require a high level of clinical experience, expertise and specialised knowledge in stroke care to provide high-quality care to stroke patients and effectively lead rapid integration of best practice developments.

The position supports the Head of Department/Service Neurology to achieve comprehensive and equitable stroke care delivery of high standard across the district in the rapidly evolving field of Stroke medicine.

The role includes participation in General Neurology Department activities including both Stroke and General Neurology clinical duties. The position will be divided as 0.8FTE Stroke and 0.2FTE General Neurology, with the on-call roster, inpatient and outpatient duties encompassing both General Neurology and Stroke. On call roster encompasses both general Neurology and acute stroke thrombolysis/ECR referral roster. Clinical responsibilities will be primarily at Wollongong Hospital where as the Stroke Governance component will be District-wide.

The Neurologist will provide expert, high-quality medical assessment and management of presenting patients in the Neurology Service (Stroke and General Neurology), including responsibility for provision of specialist Neurology Services to emergency patients, inpatients, and outpatients.

Requirements to apply

Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, USA or New Zealand

The Position in detail: 

Provide clinical inpatient and outpatient care to Stroke and Neurology patients at Wollongong Hospital with general Neurology and subspecialty responsibility commensurate with colleagues; you will also provide clinical consultation service on-site and remotely across the district.

Provide clinical leadership in stroke care, with inpatient and outpatient oversight.

Expand, develop, implement, and maintain evolving coordinated stroke service primarily at the 3 main hospitals for acute stroke admission and outpatients, TIA clinics; and incorporating other facilities within the district region which provide subacute and rehabilitation services.

As a forerunner in Stroke service provision with one of NSW's first geographical Stroke units, the health board has made rapid recent progress, particularly in acute stroke service provision in a limited resource
setting. They are committed to the appropriate development of high-quality stroke care, so as the Neurology/Stroke lead your main key challenges include:

  • Reviewing existing stroke protocols and processes between a number of sites at different stages of service development.
  • Constrained resource environment.
  • Managing volume of clinical general and stroke responsibilities while developing and leading subspecialty service.
  • Negotiating with LHD and NSW Health executives from varied clinical and non-clinical backgrounds.
