General Medicine Opportunities – Southland Hospital, Invercargill

Broaden your skills in a supportive, close-knit team while experiencing some of New Zealand’s most stunning landscapes.

Head Medical is recruiting for General Medicine roles at Southland Hospital in Invercargill – ideal for resident doctors possessing 12 months’ General Medicine experience post foundation training who are seeking variety, hands-on learning, and adventure outside of work.

  • Modern 181-bed teaching hospital with excellent breadth of clinical exposure
  • Supportive, friendly team of dual-trained General Physicians across subspecialties (Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology)
  • Competitive salary $114,820 – $131,533 NZD (depending on experience)
  • Live in “The Friendly City” – affordable, welcoming, with short commutes and a relaxed pace of life
  • Incredible lifestyle: Queenstown, Fiordland, Stewart Island, and The Catlins right on your doorstep
  • Start date: November 2025 | Contract: 12 months

The Hospital & Role
Southland Hospital is a well-equipped secondary hospital serving a catchment of 108,000 people across Invercargill and wider Southland. Unlike larger centres where patients are streamed into subspecialty teams, all acute medical patients are admitted to General Medicine – giving you unrivalled breadth of exposure and the chance to build confidence across a wide variety of conditions.

You’ll work closely with a dedicated team of General Physicians and gain hands-on experience with procedures such as thrombolysis, non-invasive ventilation, and pleural interventions, alongside ambulatory work in subspecialty clinics. With strong teaching and supervision, this role is ideal for doctors preparing for Core Medical Training or MRCP.

The Location

Invercargill is a vibrant small city with heritage charm, excellent amenities, and a true sense of community. Commutes are short, the air is clean, and locals pride themselves on their hospitality. The region offers world-class outdoor adventures – from hiking New Zealand’s Great Walks in Fiordland, spotting penguins and dolphins in The Catlins, to skiing and adrenaline sports in Queenstown. Staff holiday homes in Queenstown, Te Anau, and Arrowtown mean you can make the most of it all.

With its unique mix of professional growth and lifestyle opportunities, this is a chance to develop your medical career in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful regions.

What Head Medical can do for you

Arranging a position overseas is very exciting, but we understand that it can also be daunting and time consuming. We’re the UK’s specialist in international medical recruitment and we’ve helped many Doctors relocate since we first started out in 2008 (you can read what people have said about working with us on our testimonials page). We know it’s important to balance career opportunities with lifestyle and we’ll talk through your plans and will get to know you to make sure we find the right role in the right location.  Once we have secured a job for you, we’ll manage the Medical Registration and Visa application process, and support you (and your family) with the relocation itself.
