The Hospital
Mackay Hospital and Health Service (HHS) provides care to around 182,000 people across 90,000 square kilometres, from Sarina in the south to the Whitsunday Islands in the northeast. The service includes six hospitals, two Multi-Purpose Health Services, and three community health centres, supported by a dedicated workforce of more than 2,700 staff committed to improving health outcomes and fostering diversity.
Mackay Base Hospital is the main referral centre, supporting facilities in Proserpine, Bowen, Dysart, Clermont, Collinsville, Moranbah, and Sarina. Following a $408 million redevelopment, it is now a modern, 236-bed teaching hospital and the first regional hospital in Queensland with a fully integrated electronic medical record (ieMR).
Key services include General Medicine, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Oncology, Urology, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, and Women’s Health, as well as a 24-hour Emergency Department, ICU, and Coronary Care Unit.
The Role
This role offers the opportunity to advance your practice in general and acute care medicine through exposure to a broad case mix and hands-on experience under the supervision of an experienced, supportive team.
You will:
- Work closely with specialists and consultants across General Medicine, ICU, and sub-specialties
- Gain experience in acute admissions, ward management, clinics, and procedural care
- Develop clinical leadership and communication skills
- Participate in education sessions, case presentations, journal clubs, and mock exams
- Contribute to training and mentoring junior doctors
- Engage in continuous quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
