About the Job

Position title: Specialist Palliative Medicine 

Primary place of work: Whanganui

Position status: Permanent (1 year fixed term positions will also be considered)

Reports to: Medical Lead

Purpose of position

To provide excellent specialist palliative care to patients of the hospice in Whanganui.

To provide 24/7 specialist medical support on a rostered and rotational basis to all Hospice patients, with the primary component of the role being community-focused. To provide specialist support to the Hospice clinical team including training and oversight where needed. To provide timely, specialist medical support to external partners, including GPs, Hospital clinicians, Aged Residential Care Providers, St John’s Ambulance and others. To provide active, specialist input to the hospice`s clinical excellence as part of an interdisciplinary team (IDT), in line with its holistic ethos and in accordance with the NZ Palliative Care Standards. To provide specialist medical support and training to staff, patients, whānau and external partners as required in line with the values of the Hospice.

Requirements

  • Have FRACP – Palliative Medicine or FAChPM or equivalent overseas qualification (agreed by RACP and NZMC as appropriate for NZ practice)
  • Hold a current Annual Practicing Certificate upon joining and have a medical indemnity insurance which complies with NZ requirements. 
  • Have a commitment to the Hospice philosophy. 
  • Current drivers’ license is essential as a large component of this role involves visiting patients and whānau in the community, including rural areas.

This is a great opportunity for a Palliative specialist who wants to make a real difference in the community. There are inpatient beds at the facility for those who need them the most, but much of the work is focused on taking the care to patients in the community and at home where possible.
