There are two hospitals in the region, Whakatāne hospital has 110 beds, and Tauranga Hospital with 359 beds. The Medical Service provides specialist services across the Bay of Plenty district, which incorporates two hospital sites in Tauranga and Whakatāne (1 hour drive down the coast), delivering general internal medicine inpatient and outpatient services, plus a range of subspeciality services, to a population of approx.260,000.
This role will be based at Tauranga Hospital (359 bed, Level 2 Hospital). There are a total of 14 Orthopaedic Surgeons possessing a variety sub-specialty skills and interests allowing you to further broaden your clinical knowledge and gain exposure to a broad case load. As a teaching hospital, you will participate in training sessions and journal clubs and enjoy the diverse range of educational activities offered.
There is a focus on Māori health and a strong commitment to closing the gaps and reducing health inequalities by re-designing pathways with Māori (who make up 25.6% of the region’s population), to promote better access to healthcare services.
Tauranga is now the 5th largest city in New Zealand with an urban population of 151,300 (regionally 255,102) and is only a 2.5 hour drive south of Auckland. It has always been a premier destination, but with the strong NZ economy and a buoyant housing market, Tauranga is now the fastest growing city in New Zealand.
Tauranga, and in particular the suburb of Mount Maunganui, is well known for many things - the mountain (Mauao), the sunshine, the café and restaurant scene, the surfing, the white sandy beaches and natural salt water hotpools, the local markets with fresh produce, the safe and family-friendly lifestyle with excellent schools, and high-end real estate.
There is a domestic airport with regular daily flights to Auckland's International airport (35 minutes), making connections to/from Tauranga very easy.
