We are seeking a Consultant in Emergency Medicine for a 246-bed regional base hospital in Whangarei, in the stunning subtropical Northland region.

Northland covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres with a population of approximately 170,000, 32% of whom identify as Maori. The ED provides emergency services for this entire area from four locations including Whangarei Hospital (base) and three small regional hospitals located in Kaitaia, Dargaville and the Bay of Islands. Over 140 consultants provide support in a wide range of specialties.

The department is currently led by 10 Senior Medical Officers, supported by registrars and senior house officers, is accredited with ACEM for 12 months Advanced Training and Paediatric Log Book Training, and has a successful training program for both Part 1 and Part 2 trainees.

Along with the rest of your senior colleagues, you will work four days or evenings weekly, which includes one in four weekends. 

Nights are covered on an on-call basis by the Senior Staff.

  • Total package circa NZ$180,000 - $320,000 pa, depending on level of experience
  • Includes base salary range NZ$155,040 - $219,000 pa
  • Includes NZ$16,000 CME Allowance pa + 10 days leave pa to attend conferences

The Region

As a result, the region has developed into a real melting pot of cultures, which provides valuable exposure and experiences both professionally and socially.

You can enjoy al fresco dining, world class scuba diving, fishing, sailing, golfing, surfing, swimming with dolphins and so much more. Popular water recreation areas include the Bay of Islands and Poor Knights Islands Reserves.

Whangarei has a busy domestic airport, as well as easy access transport links to Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city which is only a two hour drive away

Requirement

Given the permanent nature of this role, you should be eligible for provisional vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand (or already hold vocational registration with MCNZ). This is the specialist pathway for registration and we can assist with paperwork if you are successfully appointed. You can check the MCNZ website here to self-assess your eligibility for this pathway.

Alternatively, eligibility for Locum Tenens registration with Medical Council of New Zealand will also be viewed favourably. Locum Tenens is a short term specialist registration, valid for up to 12 months only, which takes only 30 days to process once submitted.
