The Role
This post requires a medical practitioner with extensive generalist experience, able to demonstrate significant emergency department and primary health care knowledge and skills. The role enables a wide scope of clinical practice in Indigenous health while working closely within a supportive team of friendly staff. The District Medical Officer position provides clinical service to the Derby Hospital as well as outreach clinics in surrounding remote communities.
Appointment to this position is based on skills and experience with a minimum requirement of 12 years experience in a general practice environment, and be capable of independent practice. Previous experience working in rural hospital setting desirable. The Kimberley region has a high Aboriginal population as well as a large transient population, which impact the health services. Three quarters of attendance to hospitals within the Kimberley were for semi-urgent and non-urgent. The leading cause of emergency attendance for Kimberley residents are skin related diseases and disorders; injuries; toxic or drug effect; ear, nose, throat and respiratory system. The Location
Derby: is situated at the southern end of King Sound, 2354Km north of Perth, and is the Gateway to the Kimberley Gorges. The local jetty offers a great view of the tides while you sit and watch the sunset. The town has mud flats on 2 sides which are great for an evening BBQ, or early morning walk. Derby Hospital: is currently a 54-bed facility with Accident and Emergency Department operating theatres, day surgery, Outpatient department, GP Rooms, general medical/surgical ward with high dependency beds, children’s ward and maternity ward with a level 2 neonatal nursery. The hospital provides a 24-hour Ambulance services, staffed by orderlies and A&E nursing staff. This service extends to outlying communities and at time to Broome, Fitzroy Crossing and up the Gibb River Road. There is a close collaboration with outside health facilities—the Royal Flying Doctors Services, Derby Aboriginal Health Service and Community Health Services
