The Opportunity

Applications are invited for a permanent Specialist Dermatologist (medical). The successful appointee should have a broad range of dermatology experience and training to care for adult patients and a special interest in paediatric dermatology. Applicants interested in a locum position for one to two years may also apply.

The position involves the supervision of advanced trainees (dermatology registrars), dermatology nurses, and medical students from the University of Auckland and elsewhere. This challenging role demands outstanding professional skills and commitment to the specialty. 

About our Service

The Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand, Waikato Dermatology service provides predominantly medical dermatology care to a population of 450,000 patients and tertiary services to 950,000 in the Te Manawa Taki region. The service is based at Hamilton, and includes outreach clinics and teledermatology. 

The current Dermatology team comprises five dermatologists and three registrars (Advanced Trainees in Dermatology, Royal Australasian College of Physicians). Predominantly an outpatient service for patients with severe inflammatory skin diseases, we offer adult medical, paediatric, and subspecialty clinics, phototherapy, patch testing, and minor surgical procedures. A comprehensive medical laser service will commence in 2023. We receive more than 700 referrals each month, most of which are provided with Advice and Guidance (Teledermatology and Teledermoscopy). Team members are expected to conduct quality assurance, medical audits and research projects.

About you

The required skills and experience you will need to be considered for this role are:

  • Training and postgraduate qualifications as a Dermatologist

  • Additional training and experience in Paediatric Dermatology

  • Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a Dermatologist or be eligible to apply for Provisional Vocational Registration as a Dermatologist.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi

The appointee will be involved in teaching, continuing medical education, and quality improvement. A commitment to customer focus, service development and teamwork is essential.
