Opportunity:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an innovative and established medical oncologist with an interest and experience in lung cancer, gynaecology and AOS (Acute Oncology Service) to join an innovative and dynamic team of consultants, speciality doctors and advanced nurse practitioners in the Medical Oncology Service at this high performing trust in the South West of England

Work with a team of 23 Oncology Consultants. The unit serves a population of 350,000 and is a teaching department within this hospital. 

You will be responsible for outpatient and inpatient management of patients with lung cancer, gynaecological cancers and support the Acute Oncology Service, with scope for involvement in clinical research and service development.

Working across 2 different sites you will provide a unique experience to care for a variety of patients.

About the Trust:

  • This trust is major national centre for teaching and research, employing nearly 7,500 staff. Functioning as both a District General Hospital and as a Regional/Supra-Regional specialist hospital, over 50 clinical services are provided, which operate in a closely complementary manner to provide integrated patient care.

  • Provides comprehensive cancer services to a local population of approximately 1.7 million and fulfils the criteria for a stand-alone Cancer Centre as described in the document “Policy Framework for Commissioning of Cancer Services”. The Centre provides a high degree of specialisation with multidisciplinary clinics for all the major cancers.

  • The department has a reputation for clinical excellence and innovation

  • One of only two major trauma centres in the South of England for both adults and children.

  • Consistently one of the UK’s highest recruiting trusts of patients to clinical trials.

Main duties:

  • To provide oncology input to the UHS Lung MDT

  • To provide oncology input to the UHS Gynaecology MDT

  • Attend the Lung MDT

  • Attend the Gynae MDT

  • Share the Lung patient referrals

  • Share the Gynae patient referrals

  • Support the Patient Triggered Follow Up (PTFU) pathway

  • Provide medical oncology expertise to the Lung, Gynae & AOS services

  • Member of CUP MDT and management of CUP patients

  • Plan and supervise chemo/immunotherapy

  • Conduct on treatment review clinics

  • Supervise care of inpatients

  • Engage in Peer review meetings

  • Participate in the recruitment and running of clinical trials

Essential criteria

  • GMC Registration

  • MRCP or equivalent

  • CCT in Medical Oncology or appropriate qualifications and experience to allow entry on to the GMC Specialist Register

Desirable Criteria

  • Significant experience in Oncology research

  • Experience of working within the NHS

  • Teaching experience
