Hours of Work: 10 Sessions per week –happy to be flexible as to how these are delivered and what they comprise following negotiations with the successful applicant

Responsible for: Delivering and developing the nascent Rheumatology Service in Gibraltar

The Role

This is a new post in the Medical Department to deliver Rheumatology services to patients entitled to care at the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA). Currently the Medical Department comprises 8 Consultant Physicians. Six of these also provide General Internal Medicine cover in addition to their specialist roles (Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatric Medicine, Nephrology, Neurology & Rehabilitation Medicine and Respiratory) and two provide specialist care in Cardiology and Haematology. The Medical Department is currently ably supported by up to 10 junior doctors, principally covering the inpatient and acute services with additional clinic support provided in some areas.

The Rheumatology service in Gibraltar has never benefited from an in-house Rheumatology Service. The service is currently overseen by a Visiting UK Rheumatologist who provides weekly video-consultations supplemented by a number of in-person visits to Gibraltar to deliver face to face clinics. Service delivery is currently also supported by a senior nurse who arranges the clinics and coordinates prescriptions and blood monitoring for the approximately 150 patients on DMARD and biological therapies. One of our junior doctors also attends clinics, when able, to provide assistance.

The current visiting UK Rheumatologist (with a special interest in connective tissue diseases and vasculitis), who has been managing the service remotely for >10 years, is happy to maintain links with Gibraltar through a combination of in person visits, video consultations and/or telephonically to support the applicant and Rheumatology Service.

The successful applicant would be tasked with establishing regular outpatient clinics for both new and follow-up patients already known to the service. Referrals are received electronically via a bespoke portal to allow accurate tracking of numbers and waiting times.
