Job title: Consultant in Neurology, Permanent, Location: Mackay, Queensland

TOTAL ESTIMATED REMUNERATION $411,266 - $514,452

Working as a Consultant Neurologist you will be responsible for assisting the Director of Medicine in provision of high-quality clinical services as part of the Department of Medicine, education of Medical Staff and Students, Allied Health, interested Community Groups and Nursing Staff and active participation in patient safety, audit, research and service planning activities.

The purpose of this role is to guide the provision of quality Neurology services in the Mackay region. This includes outpatient clinics, inpatient consultation to medical teams, and being a clinical lead for the acute and subacute stroke service. Active involvement in their teaching program and regular clinics/procedural clinics at Townsville is encouraged, alongside the ability to do procedural work such as Botox injections on-site. Neurophysiology (NCS/EEG) services are performed on-site and reported in Townsville.

You will work as a part of the General Medicine department and report to the Clinical Director of Medicine.

Your area of work is a 236 bed regional hospital that services 10 rural hospitals and multi-purpose health facilities across the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday region. A health board that is embarking on an exciting period of growth with a $250m redevelopment of the base hospital to provide an additional 112 inpatient beds and an expansion of outpatient and support services. Significant upgrades are also underway at rural hospitals in Bowen, Moranbah, Proserpine and Clermont. Clinicians enjoy a challenging and rewarding clinical casemix that includes busy inpatient and outpatient general medicine, paediatrics, surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics & gynaecology and mental health services. These core inpatient services are well integrated with active emergency medicine, anaesthetic and intensive care departments and supported by a wide range of allied health services.

Specialty services are provided by tertiary hospitals in Townsville and Brisbane, including a strong undergraduate teaching affiliation with James Cook University

Requirements to apply

  • Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship or eligibility for Fellowship via the substantial comparability pathway of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) in Neurology or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.
