The Role
You will assist the Director of Surgery in ensuring the highest standard and delivery of General Surgery and your role will entail the management of acute and elective surgical conditions including both adult and children. Accredited endoscopic skills are also desirable.
You will assist with the education and supervision of surgical trainees and other medical staff, medical students, and other staff as well as in the day to day management of surgical services including active participation in patient safety, clinical audit, research and service planning activities.
You will have the opportunity to develop your leadership skills as part of working in a collaborative team environment as the service has a strong multidisciplinary ethic.
There is a strong preference for Consultants with a sub-speciality interest in Colo-rectal Surgery and you will work closely with the existing Colo-rectal surgeon to help deliver and develop a high-quality Colo-rectal service.
The Hospital and Department
Rockhampton Hospital is a 305-bed facility and the main referral hospital for Central Queensland, now providing integrated cancer care services in Central Queensland in the newly established building boasting state of the art medical equipment. The other primary hospitals within the health service are Gladstone, Emerald, Yeppoon and Biloela together with many smaller rural units transfer patients through to Rockhampton for specialist care and investigation.
The Hospital has recently gained accreditation for training in emergency medicine as well as being accredited for training in general surgery, anaesthetics, intensive care, general medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and psychiatry.
Department of Surgery: The Rockhampton Hospital has four operating theatres and two procedure rooms. The operating theatre complex is supported by a 6 bed ICU/HDU. The Department is accredited for specialist training and is heavily involved in teaching and research.
CQ Health performed 9,615 elective surgeries during 2017-2018 which equates to 8% more elective surgeries delivered to Central Queenslanders. The highly skilled theatre staff also delivered 3,828 emergency surgeries.
