New CPSBC rules make it easier for some Internationally Trained Doctors to practise in British Columbia
As of July 6, 2026, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) has introduced new rules that make it easier for certain internationally trained doctors to obtain a full medical licence in BC. For family physicians, this means you no longer work on a Provisional Licence and require Supervision; you will receive a full Independent Licence to practice from day 1.
These changes are designed to help address the province's doctor shortage by creating a more straightforward pathway for qualified physicians who completed their specialist or family medicine training outside of Canada.
Which countries are included?
The new pathway applies to doctors trained in:
- Australia
- Hong Kong
- Ireland
- New Zealand
- South Africa
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
Who can qualify?
Family doctors and specialists may be eligible for full licensure in BC if they meet specific training and certification requirements.
For example:
Family Physicians / General Practitioners
Family Physicians may qualify if they have completed at least two years of accredited postgraduate training in countries recognised by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, including:
- Australia (FRACGP)
- United Kingdom (MRCGP)
- Ireland (MICGP)
- USA (US Board Certified Family Medicine)
Specialists
Specialists may qualify if they have completed recognised specialty training and hold the appropriate certification from their home country, provided their training is considered equivalent to Canadian standards.
Why is this important?
The new rules open the door for more experienced international physicians to practise in BC, helping communities gain better access to family doctors and specialist care. The changes are expected to support ongoing efforts to address physician shortages across the province while maintaining high professional standards.
Head Medical is working with clinics and healthcare organisations across British Columbia to recruit experienced Family Physicians from the UK, Ireland, Australia and the USA, helping connect qualified doctors with rewarding opportunities throughout the province.
Family Physicians already working in BC frequently report excellent earning potential, greater clinical autonomy, a high standard of living, and a better work-life balance. Physicians can expect to earn from CAD $280,000+ per year, typically working around 35 hours per week, with many choosing to work a four-day week and enjoying greater flexibility over their schedule.
