The New RACP Accelerated Specialist Pathway

The New RACP Accelerated Specialist Pathway

Making the move to Australia as a Consultant Doctor has just become significantly easier.

The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) has introduced its new Accelerated Specialist Pathway, designed to provide a quicker and more streamlined route to specialist recognition for eligible overseas-trained Consultants.

This pathway applies to those with a substantially comparable specialist qualification and consultant-level experience from one of the following countries:

  • UK – CCT or CCST
  • Republic of Ireland – CSCST
  • India – Doctor of Medicine (MD) in General Medicine or General Paediatrics, and Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in the specialty you are applying for
  • Hong Kong – Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (FHKAM) and Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Physicians (FHKCP)
  • Sri Lanka – Doctor of Medicine (MD) and an Adult Medicine specialist qualification from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), University of Colombo

Key Advantages for Consultant Doctors relocating to Australia

  • Faster outcomes - RACP advises that decisions are typically issued within 6 weeks, compared with 4–6 months under the Standard Specialist Pathway.
  • No interview requirement - Most applicants are not required to attend an interview, reducing both delays and costs.
  • Streamlined peer review

UK and Irish applicants: usually 6 months of peer review.

India, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka: typically 12 months, with the possibility of applying for a reduction after 6 months of satisfactory practice.
