Pathway to Permanent Residency for Doctors over 45 Under the 186 TRT Process

Are you currently living and working in Australia on a temporary visa and considering permanent residency?

If you're a doctor over the age of 45 and have been in Australia on a Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa, there may now be a clear and achievable path to permanent residency, and Head Immigration can assist.

Under the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream, certain age exemptions can apply, making it possible for doctors over the usual age cap to access permanent residency.

What are the age exemptions for the Australian visa?

There are two key exemptions that may be relevant to you:

  1. Designated Regional Area Work
Doctors who have worked in a designated regional area for at least two years on a 482 visa may be exempt from the age limit when applying for the 186 TRT stream. Many healthcare roles are located in regional areas, so this exemption is often highly relevant to medical professionals.
  2. High Income Threshold
If your earnings have exceeded the Fair Work High Income Threshold (currently AUD $167,500 as of 1 July 2024) for each of the two years before applying, you may also qualify for an age exemption under this stream.

Will these age exemptions for the Australian visa help me?

For any doctors we’ve helped find medical roles in the past two years, this means permanent residency may be possible, even if you are over 45. With these exemptions in place, many doctors are in a strong position to take the next step in their migration journey.
