Live and Work in Gisborne - New Zealand

Head Medical has helped thousands of doctors relocate to stunning locations across the world. Over the years, many doctors have chosen New Zealand for its beautiful scenery and that desirable outdoor lifestyle.

When considering New Zealand, many think of the major cities. The busy capital Auckland or the cosmopolitan Wellington but there are many other regional areas that offer that perfect work/life balance… like Gisborne.

Gisborne

Located on the east coast of the North Island, Gisborne is popular for its wineries and stunning beaches. Whatever you choose to do in your spare time, Gisborne can cater for you.

Don’t just take our word for it, Dr Rosa who recently relocated there is happy to share her experience.

“The pace of life here is different to anywhere I’ve lived in the UK. I’ve heard people say that New Zealand is laid back, but Gisborne is horizontal, and that definitely seems right! The city is sat on the coast, with beautiful sandy beaches and rolling waves abound. Post-work (or pre-nights) time is filled at the beach surfing, swimming, or enjoying being outdoors, which isn’t too awful! I’ve loved living here so far, and it isn’t even fully summer yet. I’m already dreading the flight home and back to reality!

Head medical made navigating the registration processes for working in New Zealand far easier than it might otherwise have been. It was great being able to be guided through the different stages by people that knew the system already and were able to answer the questions that I had. Working as a registrar is a definite step up from foundation, but one that I think is ultimately rewarding, despite the steep learning curve. Alongside increased responsibility, you also get the opportunity to upskill in procedures such as ascitic taps and chest drains. The medical department is supportive, with consultants always a phone call away and happy to be contacted. Working in a new environment (and a new healthcare system) takes some getting used to, but once you’ve figured out where the cannulas are everything starts to feel a lot easier! As with any job, there are ups and downs, but I’m gaining loads of useful experience and growing in confidence in my clinical reasoning and medical knowledge.”

Benefits of working in Regional New Zealand

  • Working in regional areas can give you exposure to presentations you may not have the opportunity to experience in the larger tertiary centres
  • The New Zealand registration process takes around 4-5 months (significantly shorter than other locations)
  • Opportunity for collegial relationships with Consultants and Registrars
