How will Brexit affect Medical Registration in the Republic of Ireland?

Opportunities in Rep. of Ireland

There are many opportunities available for experienced Psychiatrists in the Republic of Ireland. My clients are located across the country with key locations in Cork, Dublin, Wexford and Donegal.

Recruitment is mainly on a fixed-term contract basis which would be salaried through Mental Health Services. This gives additional perks of holiday and study leave which would not be afforded to an agency locum. In very occasional cases, agency locum work might be available so please don’t hesitate to ask.

Medical Registration in Ireland.

Irish Medical Council specialist registration is required. If you are an EU citizen and hold a UK or European higher qualification, then you are currently granted automatic recognition of your qualifications. International applicants apply via an alternative route, which can include examinations (PRES). An online application form is completed and notarised documents (passport, primary medical degree certificate and higher training certificate) are then posted to Dublin.

How long does the registration process take?

Currently, the registration process takes around 6 weeks from the date your paperwork is received in the Dublin office. It would be best to anticipate an increase in applications over the next few weeks as we draw nearer to October 31st.

If you are considering working in Ireland as a doctor at some point in the future, it is worth seriously considering whether you start your application now. If the UK leaves the EU without a deal on October 31st 2019, then you will no longer be granted automatic recognition of your UK qualifications. You will be treated the same as any other international applicant and must follow that route, which could include PRES examinations, additional checks and a longer/more expensive process.

Please see this link for current information from the IMC website; https://www.medicalcouncil.ie/Registration-Applications/Brexit/. Once you hold IMC registration there are presently no revalidation requirements and you can maintain your registration by paying your annual fees.

Karen has experience supporting many doctors through this registration process and would be happy to discuss this with you if you wish. Please don’t hesitate to contact her on 0131 240 5261, karen@headmedical.com
