The Australian Registration Process for Junior Doctors

The Australian Registration Process for Junior Doctors

The Australian medical year runs from February until January, with February being their main intake period and some mid-year vacancies starting in August. Most UK doctors moving to Australia tend to start around August as this coincides with the end of the UK medical year. Others may take some time out first and do some locum work or travelling and aim to start with the February intakes.

The recruitment process is quite lengthy and starts around 7 months before potential start dates. Those hoping to start a new role in August should start applying for vacancies around February. This allows time to look for suitable roles, take part in interviews, and also go through the processes of medical registration and visa application.

Head Medical helps candidates through every step of the process – from initial job applications and finding your dream role through to the relocation itself.

Upon acceptance of a job offer in Australia, you’ll begin working with one of our experienced Registration Consultants who will guide you through the registration process from start to finish, managing applications for you as you progress.

The registration process will take approximately 4–5 months from acceptance of a job offer and consists of four steps as summarised below:

  1. Application for Primary Source Verification of your qualifications. This will involve two online applications: one to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and another to the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

  1. Application for Provisional Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  1. Application for a TSS Medium-Term OR Short-Term Stream Visa (dependant on your role) with the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DOHA). Your visa application will include any secondary applicants traveling with you (i.e. partner and children)

  1. Application for Provider and Prescriber Numbers with Medicare Australia
