Adventures in New Zealand - A GP's 6 month South Island Sabbatical

Our NZ GP Recruitment Specialist, Debbie Kirk, recently helped Maria find her dream GP role in Marlborough, New Zealand. She also helped Maria and her family settle into their new life with the assistance of Head Medical’s specialist registration and immigration team. Maria’s recently been in touch about her experiences:

I have been meaning to contact Head Medical to tell them about our adventures before now, but we’ve been busy settling in and discovering this wonderful country. Everything has worked out perfectly so far which I’m very happy about – especially as I’m currently travelling alone with my daughters (as helpful as they can be, there are times you wish their level of cooperation could go up another notch!).

We’re delighted the deal with the house went through as it’s a wonderful property. We have 4 bedrooms, an outdoor patio where we eat dinner in the evening, and are surrounded by friendly neighbours.

The girls are happy in school. In our spare time we go on hikes, swim in the ocean, and take part in other adventures as often as we can. There’s a chocolate factory nearby and wineries as far as you can see. Life seems very easy and simple.

As for me work is great. Excellent support, very friendly staff and colleagues, and everyone is very helpful. I’m still struggling a bit with learning all the pathways, new meds, and different patient clientele, etc. Also, not being a native English speaker, learning the medical language (and a million acronyms for everything) is also a challenge. I do feel I’m progressing and hopefully I’ll get it down soon.

I’m very glad we went on this adventure – it’s a once in a lifetime experience. I feel it’s a nice ‘mid-life’ break for me, and it gives me time for reflection on where I’ve been and where I’m going. And for the kids it’s a great adventure as well as a lesson for life, dealing with good times but also handling the hardships that comes being away from your home. Hopefully it will help them to become more humble and understanding.

I’d like to thank you all again for your help, give all my best to Gemma and Chrystel.
