In the first of a new series of posts concerning the affordability of Australia's diverse property market, Sarah Spencer takes a look at the state of Victoria...
With the average house price in Sydney topping AU$1,100,000 is it time to consider a position in one of Australia’s regional cities?
By the end of 2016, Sydney’s median house price climbed to a record $1.1 million with Melbourne not far behind at $795,447. Over the next few weeks we will be looking at Australia’s most affordable regional areas starting with Victoria.
Ballarat
Ballarat is an hour and a half’s drive from Melbourne’s CBD and is Victoria’s largest inland city with a population of around 100,000. The median house price in Ballarat is $320,000 and the city has continued to see positive growth and it is expected that $211 million in new development will commence there this year.
Ballarat is a beautiful city; multicultural, sporty and an arts hub. With over 30 schools; some of them the best in the state, two universities, public and private hospitals and state of the art sporting facilities it is an attractive location for both professional families and young singles.

An hour and a half from Melbourne, Bendigo is the fourth most populous city in the state and its median house price is a very affordable $325,000.
Bendigo is a vibrant contemporary regional centre, boasting beautiful streets created from one of the world’s greatest gold rushes. This coupled with a vibrant energy and sublime food, wine and shopping experiences makes it a mecca for those seeking a great lifestyle without the capital city price tags.
