The Role
The role entails management of acute and elective surgical conditions both in adults and children. The successful candidate will assist with the education and supervision of surgical trainees at Registrar, RMO and intern level, of medical students and of other medical staff.  Senior staff members are expected to take part in the day to day management of surgical services, together with junior staff, on a rotational basis. The role includes active participation in patient safety, clinical audit, research and service planning activities.

Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.

The Hospital and Location
Gladstone Hospital is at present a regional hospital with a total capacity of 100 beds and treatment spaces, offering a range of general and specialist inpatient and outpatient services including emergency, general medicine and surgery, basic orthopaedic, clinical investigation, obstetrics, maternity, gynaecology, high dependency and coronary care, palliative care, medical imaging, pathology and paediatrics.

Gladstone Hospital is growing and has at present approximately 498 full time equivalent staff delivering services across acute, community and primary care. Approximately 600 babies are born at the Gladstone Hospital each year and approximately 3165 surgical cases are performed in the two operating theatres. Around 1100 endoscopies are performed yearly in the procedure room. At present there is a 31-bed mixed General Surgical and Medical Ward and a four bed High Dependency Unit, where patients may be held pending retrieval, or for close observation not possible on the wards. Additional beds are available for paediatric patients. The hospital has a busy surgical outpatient clinic reviewing a wide variety of surgical conditions.
