The Role
As a General Anaesthetist you will be responsible for the provision of quality cost efficient anaesthesia, preadmission review and acute pain services care and clinical consultative services within the Toowoomba Hospital.

The Hospital
The Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service, of which Toowoomba Hospital is the major hospital with over 320 beds, provides a comprehensive range of high-quality acute, sub-acute, mental health, drug and alcohol, oral health, residential aged care, and community health services. They deliver clinical services to a regional population of approx 300,000, which continues to grow. Spanning 90,000 square kilometres, the catchment area includes both large and small rural community settings and the Hospital is the major regional centre providing a comprehensive range of specialist consultative services to all these surrounding districts.

There are six operating theatres, 1750 deliveries per annum, high dependency and intensive care while the Department of Anaesthesia’s current medical establishment is 22 specialists, including the Director, Visiting Medical Specialist, 11 Registrars / PHO/JCCA trainee and 2 Residents.

The Department is accredited for training of registrars with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Medical students from the Rural Clinical School, UQ rotate through the Department of Anaesthesia.

There is a strong commitment to medical education and continuing professional development, and the Hospital and Health Service has a major teaching role, with active clinical training programmes in place at both undergraduate and postgraduate level for the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

The Location
Nicknamed the “Garden City”, Toowoomba (population 125,000) is a picturesque modern city located on the rim of the Great Dividing Range. The region enjoys a temperate mountain climate of four distinct seasons, including glorious summers and cool winters.

Toowoomba is the largest inland settlement in Queensland, and the economic centre of the Darling Downs region. It is a modern city, known for its beautiful parks and gardens, good shopping, cultural and sporting facilities, as well as excellent public and private schools, and universities (Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE, University of Queensland and Southern Queensland University). While it provides all the benefits of a major city being strategically situated close to Brisbane (90 minute drive) and the Gold Coast (2 hour drive), it also offers a relaxed lifestyle and pace of life.

Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.
