More

Are you a consultant psychiatrist looking to take on a new diverse and challenging opportunity where you can shape a progressive and new model of care in mental health?

  • Opportunity to participate in a ground-breaking initiative
  • Fresh professional challenge
  • Exceptional work/life balance – no traffic, close to beach
  • Relaxed coastal lifestyle and welcoming community

The role

This is a truly unique opportunity to be part of a new initiative at Hauora Tairāwhiti District Health Board.  The service incorporates important Maori themes to support the recovery of people with mental health issues.  The role can be flexible and fitted around your interests.

Gisborne health professionals have listened to a call for a more effective response to mental health and addiction distress that affects too many Tairāwhiti families.

"Te Kuwatawata is a unique and groundbreaking response to that call. It is about applying indigenous mātauranga (knowledge/ understanding) to re-frame the way we talk about a person’s experience and to find a pathway forward for people experiencing distress", says Mental Health Head of Department, Dr Diana Kopua.

You will be a General Adult Psychiatrist with either inpatient or community experience or a combination of both, eligible for provisional vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand.

Psychiatrists working in this service enjoy making a genuine difference in a region that has some of the worst health outcomes in New Zealand. Your flexibility, openness to new ideas and professional experiences, will be embraced, encouraged and supported.

If you have experience in or are curious about developing an interest in Indigenous culture and health, are forward thinking and would enjoy being part of something fresh and new within psychiatry – then this could be the position for you.

*We are also seeking a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist for this same service.

What's on offer?

  • Competitive remuneration package (circa NZD$180k to NZD$280k per annum, depending on your experience)
  • Generous relocation assistance
  • Continuing Medical Education (CME) allowance plus 10 days CME leave per annum
  • Multidisciplinary team working
  • Exceptional work/life balance

The location

Tairāwhiti means "the coast upon which the sun shines across the water" – this region is the first on our planet to see the rising sun.

Gisborne is a small beach town on the East Cape of the North Island with a local population of around 46,000. The region is well known in New Zealand for its laidback way of life, lots of sunshine, and white sandy beaches. It is a popular holiday destination for Kiwis in the summertime whether it be luxury stays or camping up North to experience the beautiful East Cape.

You’ll work in this coastal city location. It has a vibrant café culture with many restaurants serving the best in Kiwi wine and produce.

Local schools are excellent and property is affordably priced.

Outdoor enthusiasts and families of all ages can enjoy a truly balanced lifestyle here. Imagine picking up your surfboard after a long shift…

Requirement

Given the permanent nature of this role, you should be eligible for provisional vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand (or already hold vocational registration with MCNZ). This is the specialist pathway for registration and we can assist with paperwork if you are successfully appointed. You can check the MCNZ website here to self-assess your eligibility for this pathway.

Alternatively, eligibility for Locum Tenens registration with Medical Council of New Zealand will also be viewed favourably. Locum Tenens is a short term specialist registration, valid for up to 12 months only, which takes only 30 days to process once submitted.
