We are seeking a Paediatrician (neonates) for a regional Teaching Hospital in Invercargill located on New Zealand’s South Island

The Children’s Health Service is committed to working in a team-based approach, including community services and primary healthcare, to provide excellence in children’s health care.  Paediatric Consultants work with other members of the service to provide clinical services in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and will participate in appropriate activities to provide a high standard of clinical practice and clinical expertise.  The purpose of this role is to provide a consultative service in children’s health for other medical staff and institutions in the area, to assist in the training of registrars, house officers and other staff and to contribute to the planning of children’s health services.

The Hospital

Southland Hospital provides healthcare to a population of 115,000 and is the base hospital for a wide geographical area which provides scope for an extensive variety of interesting general paediatric work.

Southland Hospital Children's Health Service is part of the Southern District Health Board District Service and has a close working relationship with colleagues at Dunedin Hospital and in particular the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which is the closest tertiary provider and referral centre. 

The Paediatric Department is actively involved in teaching.  It is affiliated to the Dunedin School of Medicine and actively supports 5th and 6th year students within the department, with some of our Paediatricians providing Senior Lecturer roles to the School of Medicine.

What’s on offer?

  • Total package ranges NZ$180,000 - $300,000 per annum, depending on experience
  • This includes: Base salary from NZ$164,369 to $244,560 pa, depending on level of experience; On call calculated on top of your base; Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 + 10 days CME leave pa.
  • Plus relocation assistance

Medical Registration

Ideally, you will hold FRACP and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

If you are an overseas Paediatrcian you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK or USA (American Board Certified) that will enable Provisional Vocational (long term) registration or Locum Tenens (short term) registration.

Locum Tenens and Provisional Vocational registration are the two pathways to medical registration in NZ for Specialist Physicians and we can assist with your medical registration and visa, if successfully appointed.

Please note, a Doctor’s relevant qualifications must be verified by ECFMG using the EPIC system on behalf of the Medical Council of New Zealand.
