Here is an exciting opportunity for a registered Consultant specialising in Paediatric Emergency Medicine to join New Zealand’s premier children’s’ hospital.

  • Permanent, Part-time position (0.85 FTE, 34 hours/week)

We are Te Whatu Ora Te Toka Tumai Auckland. We are part of the overarching organisation for New Zealand’s national health service. We provide health and disability services to more than half a million people living in central Auckland, regional services for Northland and greater Auckland, and specialist national services for the whole of New Zealand. We are the leading provider of child health care in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and the South Pacific, providing world-class inpatient, outpatient, trauma, emergency, and urgent care to infants, children and their whānau. We seek to lead New Zealand in paediatric service delivery through the building of our reputation as a national centre of excellence in child health care.

The children`s emergency department is the only dedicated Emergency Department in New Zealand focusing exclusively on the needs of children. We specialise in meeting the needs of acutely ill or injured children and young people ranging from birth to 15 years of age. We are supported by tertiary level medical, surgical, radiology and intensive care services, which are provided within the Hospital. We have an exciting opportunity for a Paediatric Emergency Medicine Specialist interested in joining the only dedicated Emergency Department in New Zealand designed to focus exclusively on the needs of children.

The Opportunity

Applications are invited for a Paediatric Emergency Medicine Specialist to provide leadership in the Children’s Emergency Department clinically and non-clinically to ensure that all children we care for receive excellent and equitable care. To ensure that we provide excellent and equitable care you will be involved in a variety of non-clinical areas. There are excellent opportunities to be involved in projects focusing on equity of care provided, quality improvement, patient safety, research, trainee supervision, high fidelity simulation based teaching and training. You will utilise your Paediatric Emergency Medicine expertise by your involvement in, clinical guideline and pathway development, medical education, multi-disciplinary team training, contributing to organisational wide systems such as mass casualty preparedness and pandemic responses. To improve the care of all acutely unwell and injured children in New Zealand you will promote Paediatric Emergency Medicine both regionally and at a National level.

Auckland is a challenging and rewarding environment to practice Paediatric Emergency Medicine as we see a broad range of childhood illnesses and injuries with a high level of complexity and acuity. The department is a purpose built facility with state of the art equipment. Our dynamic team works within a multidisciplinary framework including Hospital Play Specialists; Social Workers, Māori & Pacific Island support workers and clerical staff who of course work closely with the nursing and medical teams.

Important Skills

We welcome applications from those who:

  • Are an experienced Specialist in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Registration as a Medical Practitioner FRACP and/or FACEM or equivalent.
  • Vocational registration as a Specialist in Paediatrics and or Emergency Medicine.
  • Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine under the JTC of RACP & ACEM (or international equivalent training).
  • Bring a strong clinical background/ level of expertise
  • Demonstrate effective communication/ interpersonal skills to form working relationships with colleagues, children and whānau
  • A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori
  • Are able to demonstrate an understanding of the significance of an obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in your role Have strong skills in medical education
  • Demonstrate alignment with Te Toka Tumai values

It is essential you are vocationally registered (or eligible for registration) with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a Specialist in Paediatrics and or Emergency Medicine in New Zealand. Applicants must be eligible to work in New Zealand. Preference will be given to New Zealand Citizens and New Zealand residents as per New Zealand employment requirements, though overseas candidates are welcome to apply.
