More

We are seeking a Consultant in Medical Oncology for a 359 bed Level 2 District General Hospital in Tauranga, in the stunning Bay of Plenty.

Just think how lovely it would be to miss winter this year and have a change in scenery.

Pack your sunglasses and head to one of New Zealand’s best beaches, renowned for its white sandy beach, the cafe lifestyle and the glorious sunshine.

In Tauranga, you can enjoy a fresh professional challenge without the commitment of a permanent job. And while everyone else is sitting around the fireplace back here in the northern hemisphere, you’ll be manning the BBQ enjoying the kiwi summertime.

  • Be there for the NZ summer and explore the beautiful natural surroundings
  • Large regional teaching hospital with an excellent reputation
  • 16 January to 30 June, inclusive (arriving in NZ a week prior to starting)
  • Total package (circa NZD$200-$280k per annum, pro rata), depending on experience
  • Relocation assistance provided

The Department & Role

The Medical Service has radically changed the model of acute medicine over the last 3 years and continues to develop to provide the best quality of care whilst ensuring manageable workloads across the team. Specialist services include Oncology, Haematology, Geriatrics, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Rheumatology, Respiratory Medicine, and Infectious Diseases. As a Department there are 12 Physicians, most of whom have subspecialty interests.

We are therefore looking for someone who is up to date on recent developments within medical oncology and is passionate about working collaboratively across the team. You will have broad experience and skills in medical oncology, as well as experience and a commitment to teaching and supervising junior doctors. There may be a requirement to also work in general medicine and to participate in the on call roster.

There are also opportunities to be involved in medical education and clinical research through the Bay of Plenty Clinical School, if desired.

Ideally you will be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand and hold full vocational registration.

Alternatively, if you are not currently based in NZ, due to the short term nature of this position and the January start date, you must be eligible for either the Locum Tenens specialist registration pathway or Provisional General registration pathway. If you're unsure if you meet this criteria, please do get in touch and I can advise further about your eligibility to be considered for this role.

The Location

Tauranga is now the 5th largest city in New Zealand with an urban population of 130,000 (regionally 230,000) and is only a 2.5 hour drive south of Auckland. It has always been a premier destination, but with the strong NZ economy and a very buoyant housing market, Tauranga is now the fastest growing city in New Zealand.

New Zealanders and international migrants are continuing to make their home here, primarily for the quality of life, the schools and the beach life.

Tauranga, and in particular the suburb of Mount Maunganui, is well known across NZ for many things - the laidback vibe, the sunshine, the café culture, the surfing lifestyle, the cruise ships coming into port, the white sandy beaches, the natural salt water hotpools, the safe and family-friendly living with excellent schools, and the very strong real estate market.

During the summer months the population swells considerably as people from all over New Zealand come to stay for their summer holidays.

There are regular daily flights from Tauranga to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, making international flight connections easy.
