About the role

Our client is seeking a Medical Director for its General Medicine Department as the current Medical Director retires in mid-2022. This person will have responsibility for leading a team of five other physicians, two Geriatricians and a rheumatologist to provide General Medicine services for the people of the region. The role includes two components, the leadership component estimated at 12 hours per week, and a general physician component of 32 hours per week. You will also participate in an on-call roster averaging 10 hours per week.

This is a significant leadership and change opportunity for the organization as there is a strong desire to change the model of care by which General Medicine services are provided. Currently the service utilises a two-tier approach with consultant physicians supported by house officers. There is a determination to introduce a registrar tier progressively over the next few years, alongside which will be the development of departmental protocols to ensure safe staffing and distribution of workload. There is the ability for individual consultants to develop informal sub-specialty interests consistent with a successful secondary care setting. The introduction of a registrar tier will require change to how the senior team operates in terms of weekly structure and team dynamics and will also require the underpinning culture of the department to be addressed as part of this change process.

The successful candidate will be strongly supported by the leadership, in particular by the Chief Medical Officer and Medical Management Unit, to achieve these outcomes. The role will provide the successful candidate with opportunities to grow as a leader while continuing to gather experience as a clinician and to develop their informal sub-specialty interests.

About you

You will have vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and be registered with the Australasian College of Physicians.

You will have previous experience, and competence in leading and managing a diverse team of physicians. Experience of managing through change will be a definite advantage.

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrate a strong commitment to working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You are able to build and maintain positive working relationships with others in your team, and in other departments.

Due to the very specific requirements of this role, we will only be able to respond to applicants who meet the criteria.
