We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a passionate and enthusiastic mental health service, on a permanent basis, on the West Coast of the North Island.  The successful candidate will have an interest in consult liaison, to take up a permanent position as Medical Director with clinical duties.

This role will allow you to thrive professionally in providing your clinical expertise and leadership to Mental Health Services. The Service has a strong commitment to collaboration between clients, families, staff, and other services.

The Role

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a strong commitment to a multidisciplinary team working environment. As a service, they apply the CAPA model, which enables a holistic and partnership approach to patient care and is similar to models used in the UK. As Medical Director you will provide medical clinical leadership to ensure that Mental Health services are delivered effectively and efficiently within agreed contracts and resource, in an integrated approach with other services provided by the Whanganui District Health Board and within a continuum of care context. The role holder must also forge and foster external relationships at both regional and national levels.

In addition to a competitive salary and additional remuneration for on call and out of hours, you may opt in to the Superannuation (pension) scheme and will also receive a generous financial and leave allowance for Continuing Medical Education. Assistance with relocation and accommodation may be negotiated for permanent appointments.

The Hospital

Whanganui as a region has a progressive health service and the District Health Board is one of the largest employers, employing approximately 1,100 staff and delivering secondary care to a population of approximately 63,000 across the region - stretching from Raetihi in the north, to Marton in the south. The Hospital is the main secondary level provider of health services, with rural health centres at Taihape, Marton and Waimarino. The Hospital has received a $36m facelift which was completed in mid-2009, with new Theatre Services and Acute Services Units.

Mental Health Services are provided through multidisciplinary teams which include Psychiatrists, Registrars, GPs, Psychologists, Psychiatric Nurses, Social Workers, AHPs and Mäori Mental Health workers.

The 12-bed Inpatient Unit has been newly refurbished, so you will be working in modern purpose-built facilities.

Services include Alcohol & Drug; Child, Adolescent & Family Services; Community Mental Health; Rural Mental Health; Maori Mental Health; Adult Acute Inpatient & Forensic Rehabilitation.

The Location

Whanganui (population: urban 42,000, regional 64,000) has a genuine, easygoing vibe. It has all the facilities that you would expect of a small city, yet is still compact and easy to navigate. If you prefer to live a semi-rural relaxed lifestyle, it’s a great place for families with a real sense of community and hospitality with Farmers Markets, little cafes and restaurants, as well as plenty of sporting activities if you want to get involved.

You’re also within easy driving distance of premier ski resorts at Turoa and Whakapapa to the north west, the lush Hawke’s Bay wine region to the east, clean and quiet unspoilt beaches (Surf Highway 45, Himatangi, Foxton, Otaki) up and down the West Coast, and of course, to the South is NZ’s capital city of Wellington (2.5 hour drive).

Living here is very affordable, with quality housing and a reputation for its excellent primary and secondary education facilities, there is a lot to offer families of all ages. And the commute to work is circa 5-10 minutes from anywhere in the city – it’s a nice way of life if you prefer not to be in a city.

There are daily flights from Wanganui to Auckland, making international flight connections easy.
