Interested in an adventure to a tropical island?
An opportunity is available for an experienced Surgeon to take up a locum post in St Helena, which is a stunningly beautiful island located in the South Atlantic. The required dates are fixed from 20th July to 7th September and you will be paid on a salaried basis, plus additional non taxable allowances.
St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, with an international airport and boat links to South Africa. There is a 28-bed general hospital in the island capital, Jamestown, which covers all areas of acute medicine and surgical care. There is a very warm and friendly population of approx 4,500 people.
You will be covering on call and be available for any surgical procedures 24 hours per day, and will review and advise on referral cases, plus participate in clinics (sharing out-patient and in-patient duties). Additional skills such as training nurses and other healthcare workers, and weekly 30 mins CPD sessions will be included in your timetable also. At the end of your locum you will be required to submit a final progress report.
Full GMC registration, or equivalent is required (plus good standing with that body), and substantial postgraduate experience in general surgery including orthopaedics. Experience of laparoscopic operations (upper and lower endoscopy) is important also. Ideally you will hold FRCS or equivalent.
Working on a salaried basis as a government employee you will receive a salary of £85,000 pro rata plus an extensive benefits package including travel and accommodation.
